GLUCOSE TOLERANCE PROCEDURES

1 hour Gestational Diabetes Screen:
Give the patient 50 grams of glucola. Instruct the patient they have 5 minutes to drink the glucola. During the hour they may have NOTHING to eat, drink, smoke or chew. They will be drawn 1 hour after they finish the glucola. It is best if they can stay at the office during the testing, however, they may leave. If they choose to leave, advise them to be back 5 minutes before their draw time to ensure they will be drawn on time.

2 hour PP with Glucola:
Draw a fasting glucose on the patient. They will then be given 75 grams of glucola. Instruct the patient they have 5 minutes to drink the glucola. During the testing they may have NOTHING to eat, drink, smoke or chew. They will be drawn 2 hours after they finish the glucola. It is best if they can stay at the office during the testing, however, they may leave. If they choose to leave, advise them to be back 5 minutes before their draw time to ensure they will be drawn on time.

Glucose Tolerance Testing:
Pregnant Patients: 100 grams glucola
Non-Pregnant Adults: 75 grams glucola
Child: Verify with ordering physician how much glucola to give

Draw a fasting glucose on the patient and give them the specified amount of glucola listed above. During the testing they may have NOTHING to eat, drink, smoke or chew.

2 hour and 3 hour tolerances are drawn as follows: Fasting, 1 hour, 2 hour, 3hour etc. after they
have finished the glucola.

Example: If the patient has finished the glucola @ 7:35am, the 1 hour will be drawn @ 8:35am, the 2 hour draw @ 9:35am and the 3 hour draw @ 10:35am. A doctor may order up to a 5 hour GTT.

Some Physicians may order Fasting, 30, 60, 90, 120 min with a fading glucose on the patient and give them the specified amount of glucola listed above. They will be drawn at 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes post glucola.

Example: If the patient finishes the glucola @ 8:30am. the rest will be as follows
30 min @ 9:00am, 60 min @9:30am, 90min @10:00am, 120 min @10:30am. Basically the patient is drawn every 30 minutes for the 2 hour test instead of once every hour.

It’s best if they can stay at the office during the testing, however they may leave if they choose to. If they leave, advise them to be back 5 minutes before their draw time to ensure they will be drawn on time. The patient should also maintain a low activity level during the testing and avoid sleeping to ensure accurate test results.

***Gray top tubes (sodium fluoride) should be used for all draws
